In the midst of life's hustle, it's essential to hit pause and recharge. But in a world of work and responsibilities, finding time for self-care isn't always easy. Introducing the latest trend that's taking self-care to a whole new level: Kidulting.

What's Kidulting?

Born out of the pandemic's lockdown blues, Kidulting is the art of adults indulging in activities that were once the realm of children. From playing video games to collecting toys, watching cartoons to exploring theme parks, it's about tapping into youthful joy.

Dr Dipra Agarwal, a mental health expert, explains Kidulting as a way to unwind, revive nostalgia, and channel creativity, bridging age boundaries.

The concept highlights the idea that even though individuals have grown up and are considered adults, they still enjoy and participate in things that are often considered more suitable for younger age groups

Kidulting can encompass a wide range of activities, such as:

  • Playing video games
  • Collecting toys
  •  Watching cartoons
  • Reading children's books
  • attending theme parks,

  • participating in various forms of playful and nostalgic entertainment.

The rise of kidulting can be seen as a reaction to the stresses and responsibilities of adult life, as individuals seek out ways to unwind, relive positive memories, and tap into their creativity.

Dr Agarwal further explains that it "also reflects the blurring of traditional age boundaries and the recognition that people of all ages can find joy in activities that were once considered exclusive to certain life stages"

According to experts, and Dr Agarwal, engaging in Kidulting, or embracing activities typically associated with children or adolescents as an adult, can have several benefits

Stress Escape: Step away from adult pressures and dive into carefree play for a stress-free breather.

Nostalgia Boost: Revisit childhood favorites to trigger nostalgia and uplift your spirits.

Fuel Creativity: Engaging in imaginative activities ignites creative thinking and problem-solving.

Mindfulness Moments: Kidulting promotes mindfulness, anchoring you in the present.

Break from Routine: Shake off monotony, recharge, and return to adult life with a fresh outlook.

Burnout Barrier: Prevent burnout by recharging, finding balance, and taking on challenges anew.

The Kidulting trend

A 2021 survey by Bloomberg revealed that 58% of toy purchases were for personal enjoyment among parents.

Global brands, including McDonald's, are tapping into the trend with adult-oriented Happy Meals featuring collectible toys.

TikTok influencers flaunt 2000s fashion, while adult kickball leagues and nostalgic movies like Barbie and Mario Bros make comebacks.

In India, Kidulting is marked by the rise of gaming zones, playrooms, and rage rooms, offering adults a playful escape.

Kidulting isn't just a trend; it's a wellness revolution, letting grown-ups cherish the past and embrace the present.
