In course of recent developments in the cyclonic storm Biparjoy, it has intensified into an “extremely severe cyclonic storm” over the past couple of days over the east central Arabian Sea. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert over the areas of Mumbai and Thane.
According to IMD, it is likely to make landfall between Kutch district of Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan on June 15. The notified areas are reported to receive a continued stretch of gusty winds and intense rainfall.

Mumbai has been witnessing a strong rush of winds over the weekend, reportedly in isolated areas. The severity of the winds could also be highlighted with some reports of roofs flying off some loosely built shacks in the affected areas.

Several scheduled flights were delayed or even suspended over the weekend due to the bad weather which, in-exchange, caused closure of runways.

Over the weekend, with the intensification of the cyclone, high tidal waves were recorded at Marine Drive. In accordance with the reports of IMD, many parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Palghar have come under moderate to heavy rainfall, with a following notice by Regional Meteorological Department of Mumbai about moderate rains in the areas of Ratnagiri, Thane, Raigad.
As per IMD’s bulletin, the “extremely severe cyclonic storm” is supposed to make landfall along the areas between Mandvi in Kutch and Pakistan’s Karachi. Due to that specific reason, the entire coastline has been put on high alert with all the fishing activities have being suspended by the regulatory bodies,
A complete evacuation process along the view of the sea is in place. The Officials in coastal Devbhumi Dwarka have said that approximately 1,300 people have already been shifted to safe spots.

Recent reports by the IMD have stated that Ahmedabad is likely to receive rain or even thundershowers along with other areas like Gandhinagar, Kutch and other parts of south Gujarat and Saurashtra.
Due to the prevailing bad weather because of the cyclone, an Amritsar-Ahmedabad IndiGo flight had to reportedly deviate from it’s route and enter Pakistan to avoid bad weather.

The district administration of Kutch has imposed Section 144, and has prohibited any movements near the seashore, as a precautionary measure to avoid any human casualty due to the expected severe nature of the cyclone.
It is yet to be seen how much of a severe a shape the cyclone takes before hitting its estimated landfall, but its current traits of high tidal waves, heavy winds and rainfall show that precautionary measures are advisable for residents of every area that fall in its route.
