How did South Korea become the Suicide Capital of the World?

The suicide rate in South Korea is dizzyingly high, which is quite shocking given that the country seems to be quite a developed one. However, the reality is quite different from the glossy life that you see in the Utopian world of K-dramas.

A recent suicide in South Korea brought the spotlight back on the high suicide rates in the country. On August 29, the news of the death of actress and model Yoo Joo-eun sent shock waves across South Korea and her fans all over the world.

The 27-year-old actress died by suicide. Her brother took to her Instagram to confirm the news. It was also reported that she left a suicide note addressing her parents. She was known for featuring in tvN's popular K-drama Big Forest and TV Chosun's Joseon Survival Period.

In the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries, South Korea ranks at the top when it comes to the number of suicides.

The data itself shows the horror behind the "culture of suicide" in South Korea. Several famous stars have also killed themselves over the last decade, like Yoo Joo-eun.
