In the town of Ingeniero Budge, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, a group of children made a shocking discovery when they stumbled upon a red suitcase containing body parts believed to be of Fernando Pérez Algaba, a prominent crypto-millionaire and influencer in the cryptocurrency world.
Fernando had been reported missing only a few days before this grim instance.
The parents of the children immediately informed the authorities in Buenos Aires, leading to an official inquiry. After examination, the contents of the suitcase were confirmed to be the legs and forearm of Fernando, with an additional complete arm discovered near a stream.
Subsequently, the police found the influencer's head and torso in the same area where the suitcase was discovered. Through an autopsy and the use of fingerprints and tattoos, law enforcement successfully identified the body parts as belonging to Fernando Pérez Algaba, who had been reported missing just a few days earlier.
The autopsy revealed that the individual had been shot three times before being dismembered and concealed inside the suitcase.
Fernando Pérez Algaba, known as "Lechuga" (lettuce) among his friends and social media followers, was an entrepreneur who started his journey at the young age of 14 as a pizza delivery guy. He gradually diversified into the world of vehicle restoration and resale, amassing substantial wealth through luxury vehicle rentals and cryptocurrency transactions.
Although residing in Barcelona, Spain, Algaba had reportedly been staying in Argentina for a week before the supposed homicide. He had leased a flat and was expected to surrender the keys on July 19, but he failed to appear or respond to calls, according to the property owner.
While the motive remains uncertain, authorities suspect that the demise of the crypto-influencer might be linked to his substantial debts. Algaba's brother, Rodolfo Pérez, revealed that Fernando was recently facing financial hardships due to issues stemming from crypto-investments and owed significant loans to Argentina's tax agency.
Additionally, his company "Motors Lettuce SRL," established in January 2018, had encountered problems with bounced checks within a year of its establishment.
Apart from financial issues, it appears that Algaba had also encountered trouble with the Barra Bravas, a violent gang deeply entrenched in Argentina's soccer scene. They had been demanding repayment of a $40,000 loan, leading Fernando to leave a note on his phone stating, "If something happens to me, everyone is already warned."
Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with Algaba's demise. Although the motive behind the purported homicide remains unclear, officials strongly consider the influencer's considerable debts as a likely motive.
