There's a new twist to the Delhi New Year accident case. Reportedly, the victim was not alone at the time of the accident and was accompanied by a pillion rider. On New Year, a 20-year-old Delhi woman was hit by a car while riding her scooter and was dragged by the accused for nearly 12 km, without the police noticing.

Who's the pillion rider? According to Delhi police sources, the pillion rider is another woman who was with the victim at the time of the accident.

  • Reportedly, the pillion rider escaped the accident with minor injuries. But instead of reporting the accident and helping her friend, she fled the spot.
  • Delhi police reportedly found out about the pillion rider while tracing the route the victim took on the night of the accident.
  • Delhi police have reportedly recorded the statement of the pillion rider under Section 164 (recording of confessions and statements) and will present it before the magistrate.
  • According to the pillion rider, the victim's leg got stuck on the car's axle after which she was dragged for nearly 12 km.
  • Some reports also say that the pillion rider was dropped home first and the accident took place later.

CCTV footage: India Today accessed a new CCTV footage of the night of the accident.

  • 1.45 am: The victim and her friend are seen leaving a hotel after a New Year party.
  • The victim is seen wearing a pink T-shirt, while her friend is seen wearing a red T-shirt.
  • The CCTV footage shows the victim's friend riding the scooty for a while before the victim takes over.
  • Soon the scooty is seen getting hit by a car, while the victim's friend riding pillion escapes with minor injuries, and the victim gets dragged by the car.
  • 3.24 am: An eyewitness alerts the police of a body being dragged by a car.
  • 4.11 am: The body falls on the road.

What is known about the accident? So far, five men who hit the girl's scooty and dragged her for several kilometres have been taken into custody.

  • An investigation is underway to determine whether the five men were drunk when the accident took place.
  • According to the accused, when they hit the scooty, they fled the accident spot out of fear but did not realise that the victim's leg had gotten stuck in the car wheels as they were blaring music in the car.
  • The victim was dragged for nearly 12 km between Sultanpuri and Kanjhawala before her body fell on Kanjhawala road.
  • An eyewitness who alerted the police about a body being dragged by a car claimed that the accused repeatedly took several u-turns on a 4 km stretch.

The incident only came to light after an eyewitness reported it to the police at around 3.24 am. The witness chased the car for nearly an hour, before the body fell off on the road. The police came to the spot after the body had fallen off the car.

Delhi police have faced intense criticism for their oversight on New Year's day. Questions have been raised on why there were no police checkpoints anywhere between the distance where the car was driving around, why the police did not find the accused dragging the body along while a witness was chasing the car, and why despite it being New Year, there was bad security arrangement.

The victim's family also alleged foul play given that the victim's body was found naked on the road. However, Delhi police refuted claims that she was sexually assaulted.
