New Delhi is abuzz with preparations as it gets ready to host the G20 Summit on September 9 and 10. This event is expected to see the participation of leaders and delegates from 40 countries, making it a historic gathering of world leaders, as noted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This will be the first G20 summit to take place in India and in South Asia.

As we approach the mega-event, it's becoming clearer which world leaders will attend and who will choose to stay away.

The arrival of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday evening (September 5) marked the beginning of world leaders and their delegations arriving. More arrivals are expected over the next couple of days before the summit officially commences on September 9.

Confirmed attendees

  • US President Biden is scheduled to visit India from September 7 to September 10 to take part in the summit after he tested negative for Covid on Tuesday. His discussions will revolve around collaborative efforts to address global challenges, including the war in Ukraine, the transition to clean energy and the fight against climate change. The White House has also emphasised the focus on strengthening multilateral development banks and addressing the economic and social impacts of the Ukraine conflict.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin informed the Indian Prime Minister last week that has opted not to attend the G20 Summit in New Delhi, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov representing the country. He was the first world leader to decline the invitation.
  • Likewise, Russia's close ally China will be represented at the summit by Premier Li Qiang, indicating President Xi Jinping's absence from the event due to various reasons that can be speculated easily. This would be the first time when the Chinese President won't attend a G20 summit.

  • UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is set to participate in the summit, and it is reported that he may engage in discussions concerning UK-India trade negotiations during a separate bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This visit would be Sunak's first official visit to India after he took oath as the PM.
  • French President Emmanuel Macron is also set to participate in the G20 Summit, with reports suggesting that he will be accommodated at the Claridges Hotel in Central Delhi during his visit. As an emerging defence partner, he is also expected to hold bilateral talks with the Indian Prime Minister on the summit's sidelines.
  • South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is confirmed to attend the G20 Summit. South Korea's ambassador to India, Chang Jae Bok, announced this participation earlier this month.
  • Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has confirmed his attendance at the G20 Summit, emphasizing the importance of global solidarity with Ukraine. While having a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskey, Trudeau expressed his disappointment as the Ukrainian counterpart was not invited.
  • Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's confirmed visit to India is part of his broader three-nation tour, which includes Indonesia and the Philippines.
  • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is also confirmed to participate in the summit and will subsequently travel to New York for the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
  • The German Chancellor Olaf Scholz while conforming to his arrival stressed the summit still remains an important one with Xi and Putin's presence.
  • Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will also attend the summit and will lead the condemnation of the Chinese aggression as it is currently chairing the Group of 7.

  • South African President Cyril Ramposha had expressed his willingness to attend the summit, after hosting the BRICS Summit last week. His presence is also important as India sought membership for the African Union in the G20.
  • According to media reports, Brazil, which is set to lead the G20 after India, will be represented by Brazilian President Lula da Silva.

Absentees

  • The Russian President and his Chinese counterpart have confirmed not attending the summit in person, however, their representatives will.
  • President Zelensky will not attend the G20 Summit in New Delhi as he did not receive an invitation.

Guest Countries

  • The G20 Summit will also see the participation of "guest countries," including the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, the UAE, Oman, Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, and Nigeria.
  • Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be present at the summit as a guest as Bangladesh is not a G20 member and is planning to host French President Macron in New Delhi after the event.

The G20 comprises 19 individual nations—Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US—and the European Union (EU).
