The counting of votes in the high-stakes Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly Elections is on, with both the BJP and the Congress fighting it out for victory in the two important states. For the BJP, a win will go down as a vote in favour of Narendra Modi's brand of politics and his big ticket economic reforms – demonetisation and GST. The Congress, on the other hand, will look at a good showing as a vote for Rahul Gandhi's leadership.
During the last few weeks, election fever gained momentum with aggressive election campaigns by the two key players - the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the grand old Congress party.
While Gujarat recorded an overall turnout of 68. 41 per cent across the two phases, Himachal pradesh also saw good voter turnout.
According to the initial trends, the BJP is set to form the government in the two states. This falls in line with the predictions made by the various exit polls which also projected a win for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party in the two states that went to polls.
