How Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is spending his time in jail

He’s withdrawn into a deep slump. The Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda’s once all-powerful chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, so used to teeming hordes of devoted followers, flashy 40-car cavalcades and the ubiquitous retinue of sadhvis and armed guards, is realising that his new "home" — Rohtak’s Sunaria Jail — will be a very lonesome place.

Reportedly deprived even of the company of cell mates because of the perceived threat to his life, Singh spends nearly all his waking hours by himself. Accustomed to extravagance and luxury, the bareness of his quarters have also brought on a bad case of insomnia in the man.

But here’s the kicker: for more than a fortnight since his incarceration on August 25, Singh hasn’t had a single visitor! Officials said neither any of the 70 million followers he claims to have nor the ten family members and associates the Dera Chief had listed as "regular visitors", have bothered to check on his welfare. The list includes his mother Naseeb Kaur, daughters Charanpreet and Amanpreet, and son Jasmeet Insan.

The one mulaqatee (visitor) Singh’s really pining for, is Honeypreet Insan, the comely young housewife he adopted as a "daughter" in 2009, but someone with whom he’s since been variously accused of having inappropriate, illicit and incestuous relations with.

Honeypreet, who was inexplicably permitted to accompany Singh on his widely reported chopper-ride to jail, and who Singh wanted beside him inside Rohtak Jail as his "physiotherapist", was his "leading lady" in the five movies Singh produced, directed, acted in, designed costumes for, wrote lyrics and sang all the songs for since 2015.

She’s on the run, belatedly accused on charges of attempting to spring her "master" from the CBI’s custody outside the court at Panchkula on August 25. The Haryana Police have pasted posters bearing Honeypreet’s picture at all airports and land borders, ostensibly, to prevent her from fleeing the country. So here’s the thing: Honeypreet’s not coming to see Singh any time soon. Perhaps someone ought to tell him.
