PM Modi is like CM Modi

India is not Gujarat, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working like chief minister Modi. Here are key reasons why, Modi and his team, who believe governance is not a prisoner of geography, are making Delhi into a Gandhinagar of sorts.

1. In Gujarat, Modi began his chief minister innings by organising inter-departmental meetings for one department to understand the problems of others to overcome issues and overlaps and yield better results. In Modi's August 15 speech, he made it amply clear how enraged he was to learn that government departments had gone to court against each other.

2. Social media was the cornerstone of Modi's governance. Many ideas came from common citizens. In Delhi, he is doing so on a larger and grander scale by launching the social media platform, My Government - Meri Sarkar. Modi believes the mai baap sarkar should make way for meri sarkar.

3. His decision to overrule the sports ministry's recommendation to not send teams of four disciplines, football, volleyball, swimming and handball for the Asian Games to be held in South Korea, from September 19 to October 4, echoed his Gujarat slogan: "Gujarat Khelega, Gujarat Jeetega". This may well become "Bharat Khelega, Bharat Jeetega". His Gujarat State Olympics, Khel-Mahakumbh, launched in 2010, covering 16 Olympic disciplines, coupled with an upgrade of sport facilities and allowances for sportspersons, made sports a people's movement in the state.

4. One of the cornerstones of Modi's governance in Gujarat was keeping bureaucrats on a short leash by making them adhere to a new code of discipline embedded in policy-based governance and commitment to fulfilling administrative targets, while assuring protection from political interference. Everything he is doing in Delhi points to the same, only on a larger scale.
