Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insaan of Dera Sacha Sauda has got his quantum of punishment today, and he’s been sentenced to 20 years in prison - 10 years for each of the two rape cases - by the CBI court that pronounced him guilty. The “Love Charger” Baba apparently broke down in court and begged for mercy, even as the court was pronouncing the punishment for the godman raping two women devotees repeatedly over two years and often at gun-point.
10 years imprisonment for #RamRahim, guilty of repeatedly raping a woman devotee at #DeraSachaSauda.

The harrowing letter that was the clinching evidence behind Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s sexual abuse of women in his dera has been reported on, but doesn’t even begin to approximate how the merchants of religion and spirituality use sexual exploitation to feel all-powerful and invincible. However, like his cohorts in Asaram, Nityananda, Rampal and others, Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s conviction and jail sentence reinstates faith in the Indian judiciary.

Cult of #ramRahimRapist Dera sacha sauda calls itself a "social & cultural organisation". Sounds familiar.

Since August 25, Friday, when the godman was convicted by the CBI court in Panchkula, Chandigarh, 36 people have lost their lives in the ensuing rioting, arson and destruction of property. Section 144 was imposed in several parts of Haryana, Punjab and Delhi, but the ML Khattar government in Haryana was found utterly wanting in preparedness as it allowed the devotees to gather in such large numbers. In fact, the Punjab and Haryana high court castigated the Haryana government in no uncertain terms, and even saying PM Narendra Modi isn’t just the BJP’s PM, but whole of India’s.
The quantum of punishment has been welcomed by Twitterati, which feels relief after days of unimaginable violence unleashed by the Dera followers.
Celebration around as rapist gets 10 years in jail. Waiting for judgment in murder case. Hope he rots inside for life. #RamRahimSentencing

Ram Rahim will be Qaidi Number 1997 according to @satenderchauhan who's reporting from Rohtak Jail. Updates coming in thick and fast.

While the sentencing has been welcomed, it remains to be seen what happens to the other ongoing investigations, including one of murder at the behest of the Dera leader. While Haryana, Punjab and Delhi are on high alert once again, that a spiritual charlatan and rapist has got his due is indeed something India should be collectively raising a toast to. Hope this teaches our political class a lesson and they stop hobnobbing with criminal godmen who rape (and sometimes even kill) for thrill.
