Ukraine Russia War: Martial law in Ukraine, Russian troops on ground cross border and more

A full-scale invasion, missiles over the Ukrainian capital, Russian military operations in rebel areas, airbases targeted, helicopters downed, foot soldiers cross borders, air raid sounded, martial law announced, the war between Ukraine and Russia has begun in terms of all purposes and intents.

For months and days, it was only speculation dubbed ‘Western hysteria’ by Russian President Vladimir Putin that they will ever invade Ukraine. Of course, Putin was lying through his teeth, but continues to deny it has begun an invasion of Ukraine.

Here are the latest updates on the ensuing Ukraine-Russia war:

- NATO chief says they have no plans to send troops to Ukraine, even as border guards in Ukraine report Russian troops breaking into the north of the Kyiv region. 

NATO warns Russia of severe sanctions for its reckless invasion of Ukraine.  

Ukraine President calls Russia 'Nazi Germany'. 

- Ukrainians flee the country as Russia launches an invasion. Some managed to cross the border to Poland. Germany has said it will help Poland with the Ukrainian refugee influx. 

- MEA MoS V Muraleedharan says that India is taking measures to bring back about 18,000 Indian nationals from Ukraine and that alternative arrangements are being made for evacuation as the Ukrainian airspace has been closed.

Kremlin reacts to the stock market crash and the tumble Russian currency ruble took, calling it a 'predictable emotional reaction'.  

- Indian embassy in Ukraine posts helpline numbers and a third advisory for nationals stranded in Ukraine. It has been advised for those earing sirens to take shelter at the nearest bomb shelter. 

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to make an address to the nation over the Ukraine-Russia situation. 

Europe is in jitters over the Russian invasion of Ukraine. France's Macron called for a NATO summit ASAP, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for an emergency parliamentary sitting on Sunday, February 27, 2022, while the wheat prices in Europe hit a record high. Scholz also condemned Putin saying that he's 'jeopardising peace in Europe'.

UN pleads with Russia to stop the invasion and take back its troops. 

- Updated map of Ukraine with marked areas where explosions were reported and areas where the Russian troops have entered.  

- Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on landing in Moscow, Russia earlier today said, "What a time I have come, so much excitement." His comments come as Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.   

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan visits Russia at a time when the Putin-led country is under severe criticism and sanctions for invading Ukraine. Khan is the first world leader visiting Russia since it launched an invasion of Ukraine and also the first Pakistan PM visit to Russia in 23 years.   

- Moldova says it is closing its airspace citing the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Latest Flightradar 24 data shows flights avoiding the entire Ukraine-Russia eastern border, the Black Sea, Moldova, Ukraine and even Belarus's airspace.

- Lithuania is set to declare a national emergency following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Lithuania is a former Soviet Union country like Ukraine.  

Ukraine's official Twitter handle known for posting memes against Russian aggression, tweets a Hitler meme, but says it is 'our and your reality'. 

- Ukraine's official Twitter handle asks Ukrainians and all others to trust in news on the situation only from verified sources and warns that Russia could in the next few days use a flurry of misinformation to further destabilise the situation.  

- Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that citizens willing to defend the country from Russian invasion will be provided arms. 

- Ukraine severs all diplomatic ties with Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announces. 

- AFP reports quoting the Ukrainian Presidency that over 40 Ukrainian soldiers and 10 civilians have been killed.  

- Panic buying and hurried ATM withdrawals were reported in Ukraine. People made a beeline at superstores and other essential stores in order to stock up.  

- Ukraine's envoy to India sought the country's support. Igor Polikha urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin to calm the situation.  

- The map below marks the places where military strikes were reported in Ukraine. 

- Ukraine claims to have shot down five Russian planes and a helicopter. A Reuters report said that Ukraine has counted at least 7 casualties due to shelling by the Russian forces. 9 people have been injured. On the other hand, Russia has claimed to have struck Ukrainian airbases and air defences. 

Ukraine's border guard service says that on-ground Russian troops have crossed the border and into Ukraine.   

- Explosions were reported in several parts of Ukraine, including in capital city Kyiv and other cities outside of rebel-held eastern areas.  

- Indian government has advised its nationals in transit inside Ukraine, to the airport or elsewhere, to return to their respective cities, or to safer regions, especially along the western border.

- The second of the third Air India flight scheduled to bring back stranded Indian nationals from Ukraine made a u-turn before reaching Ukraine. The flight was already en route from New Delhi to Kyiv when it was forced to turn around.

- Ukraine has announced that its airspace is closed for civilian carriers. Flights already en route and slated to enter the Ukrainian airspace have all made u-turns.
