5 players who didn’t get India call despite good show in IPL

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 18-member squad for the Indian team’s T20 series in South Africa, which starts on June 9. BCCI also announced the 17-member squad for Test Series in England.

KL Rahul will lead the team for the T20 series, while Rohit Sharma will captain the team in Tests.

Umran Malik, the young pace sensation from Jammu, who impressed everyone with his pace bowling in IPL 2022, has also been given his maiden call for team India for T20 series. Along with him, Arshdeep Singh will also mark his debut for India in the shortest format of the game.

Dinesh Karthik, who has been in terrific form in IPL, has also been included in the T20 squad. Venkatesh Iyer, who didn’t quite impress with the bat this time in IPL, has been given a place in the T20 squad.  

But several players have missed the cut despite performing really well in the IPL.

Here are five of them:

SANJU SAMSON

The wicket-keeper batter from Kerala did really well during this season of IPL. He led Rajasthan Royals from the front winning 9 out of 14 games. The team which was considered an underdog now stands at the second position, not too far from winning the IPL.

His batting performance was also good. In the 14 matches he played, Samson scored 374 runs.

RAHUL TRIPATHI

The explosive batter from Ranchi made his presence felt as he went on to score 413 runs in 14 matches in IPL this season. He was ignored by the BCCI selectors who picked Venkatesh Iyer over Tripathi despite of a below-average performance by Iyer this season. Iyer this season has scored just 182 runs in 12 matches.

Here are the stats of Rahul Tripathi is this year's IPL

  • Runs: 413
  • Average: 37.55
  • Strike rate: 158.24

SHIKAR DHAWAN

Dhawan also was in a terrific form this season. In the 14 matches he played, Dhawan scored 460 runs at an average of 38.33. His batting stats were even better than highest-selling player of Mumbai Indians, Ishan Kishan. Kishan, in 14 matches, scored 418 runs at an average of 32.15.

KHALEEL AHMED

The left-arm medium pacer who hails from Rajasthan, plays for Delhi Capitals in IPL. He clinched 16 wickets in 10 matches he played this season. It was widely expected that he would be given a place in the Indian team. His bowling speed was also impressive as he bowled at around 140kmph.

His stats in IPL this year:

  • Matches: 10
  • Wickets: 16
  • Economy: 8.04

UMESH YADAV

Umesh Yadav was one of the pacers of Kolkata Knight Riders who delivered good performances all through the season. He picked up 16 wickets in 12 matches he played. Despite this, Yadav, who also has very good pace, was ignored by the BCCI.
