Chelsea is right in booting out Mourinho

English Premier League (EPL) side Chelsea fired the most successful manager in its history, and arguably one of the top managers of the 21st century, Jose Mourinho on Thursday.

This came on the heels of Mourinho publicly questioning the loyalty of his players after another abysmal performance at home against Bournemouth which left the defending EPL champions only a point above the relegation zone.

Football has become a high-turnover sport. Retaining a manager beyond two-three years would perhaps be considered as compromising with efficincy, and Chelsea did what any club would do: give a man the chance to turn things around; if he can't, fire him, for he is being paid nearly ten million pounds an year to "manage".

However, Mourinho, over the years, had built the personality of being an "immovable object", especially with the Chelsea fans willing to sing his name regardless of the results. This legion of Mourinho fans was out there abusing their players on Thursday on social media, blaming them for Chelsea's below par performance this season. These Mourinho fans have apparently assumed that the players are under-performing and that the manager doesn't deserve them, which is a ludicrous position to take.

Work culture

Imagine being Eden Hazard, the best player in the EPL last year, having your loyalty publicly questioned twice in 15 minutes by the manager. Mourinho's press conference after the loss at Leicester was the turning point, where he questioned the loyalty of his players and wondered if Hazard, who had taken himself off after injury was injured at all.

Imagine being Eden Hazard, coming to work the next day.

Mourinho's methods are famous for getting short-term results, but there was a reason Chelsea fired him earlier, in 2007, and that Real Madrid basically begged him to leave after how toxic their locker room had become. His methods don't make for a great workplace environment in the long-term.

From everything we know, efficiency in the workplace is at its highest when the employees are happy. Mourinho's employees haven't been happy this season because their manager has questioned their ability publicly. In one of the matches, Mourinho substituted Nemanja Matic just 15 minutes after he was brought on from the bench!

Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa, Branislav Ivanovic, Hazard, Oscar, Matic are good players... great even. It's not like all of them decided to play badly one day.

If one player loses his desire to play, he has a problem, but if an entire team is underperforming, it is the boss - the manager in this case - who has the problem.

Why do football clubs hire Mourinho?

They hire him to ignite their players and win trophies because there is hardly anybody who wins more than Mourinho. Except this season, though, and 15 out of 20 teams are winning more than him and Chelsea, who have spent around 1.1 billion pounds on players in the last ten years. That's a lot of money to flounder at the 16th place.

Why are the results so bad?

It is probably because the players don't want to play for Mourinho or because they are terribly tired.

The problem Mourinho has here is that he can't even show authority and bench these players. Since he likes a tight-knit squad he sold some of the team members who he considered "extra" and was left with a very top-heavy team. So his options were limited.

He had to go to war with the same players whom he would demolish every week in the media, players whom he said he felt betrayed by. It isn't really surprising that those players are underperforming for him.

For his legion of fans though, he remains infallible, and he will always be revered at Chelsea. The question now for the Mourinho fans is: isn't it stupid to not change an opinion if new information comes to light?
