Why the age gap between Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas is almost perfect

It has never been actually smooth. And it has an interesting background

If you are celebrating your birthday, then age is just a number. But the rule doesn’t apply to the rest of your days, especially when you hang out with someone 10 years older/younger than you. Priyanka Chopra being age-shamed for apparently dating Nick Jonas can be attributed to the unmatched popularity and subsequent limelight the Quantico actor enjoys at home and abroad. But only to some extent.

The rest goes to all those various stereotypes that bind the dating dictionary.

Age is just a number? Well, this is (still) a debate

Well, here is a twist.

Soon after the photos of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas holidaying in India went viral, many social media users united in their opinion that Priyanka Chopra came across apparently as 'Nick’s mother', a doting mother apparently protecting Nick in their various photo opportunities. Several memes were born on the subject.

Should Ranbir Kapoor also be trolled because Priyanka Chopra is being trolled?

Another section on social media soon scouted out some not-so-old photos of Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt and raised demands for calling Ranbir Kapoor Alia Bhatt’s father/uncle. And soon, the internet turned into an album of celebrity couples known for their age difference: Sanjay Dutt-Manyata, Dharmendra-Hema Malini, Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor-Mira Rajput, Ritesh Deshmukh-Genelia D’Souza, etc.

The issue raised here is — why is it always valid for older men to date younger women without drawing much attention, but not the other way round.

In 1991, when a 33-year-old Amrita Singh married 21-year-old Saif Ali Khan, it created great stir. But nobody batted an eylid when in 2012, Saif Ali Khan married Kareena Kapoor, 11 years younger.

But, hello! This is 2018.

Do we really think age-shaming is cool? And is churning out a gender dialogue from this horrendous practice making us any cooler? Will making fun of Ranbir Kapoor for dating Alia do justice to Priyanka Chopra somehow?

Supermodel Milind Soman was trolled for dating a much younger Ankita Konwar. A detailed discussion on how Ankita 'grew up' quite fast in a very short span of time, perhaps to catch up with Milind Soman, preceded their much-awaited marriage.

Such love, across the ages, as it were, has never been smooth. But it has an interesting background.

According to the rule of seven, an oft-quoted relationship rule, the age of the younger partner (regardless of gender, but, of course, female!) should be half the older partner’s age plus seven. Going by the rule, a 50-year-old should ideally date a 32-year old.

The rule has room enough to ensure that men become “sufficiently authoritative” and make up for women who 'mature too quickly'.

The origin of the rule is not known, but it has references in American movies like The Moon in Blue (1953).

Well, going by the rule, Priyanka and Nick are just perfect! So are the other couples who are happy and killing it!

Can we just stop practising our school maths on new-age love?
