1. FEWER CASES, MORE DEATHS

After a surge of Omicron cases in January, cases are rapidly declining in different parts of the country. India has logged 67,597 fresh Covid cases over the last 24 hours. This number is 19.4% less than the previous day.

The country’s daily positivity rate has also dropped from 7.25% to 5.02%. The weekly positivity rate stands at 8.3%.

1,80,456 Covid patients have recovered from the virus and 13,46,534 Covid tests were conducted in the last 24 hours.

Unlike daily infections, the death toll still remains a concern. As many as 1,188 fatalities were recorded on February 7 due to the virus.

2. AADHAAR NOT MANDATORY FOR VACCINATION

The Central government has informed the Supreme Court that submitting Aadhaar card details is not mandatory for vaccination against Covid-19.

The Supreme Court has further asked authorities not to ask people for Aadhaar card for vaccination.

Earlier, a PIL was filed that said some vaccination centres were insisting on Aadhaar card verification.

“Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) filed an affidavit in the petition. It specifically records that the Aadhaar card is not mandatory for registration on the CoWin portal and any one of the nine documents can be produced. Production of the Aadhaar is not mandatory for availing vaccination. The grievance of the petitioner is duly met. All concerned authority shall act in pursuant to the policy of the health ministry,” the Bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant said while disposing of the PIL.
