[Shocking] Model jumps out of moving car to escape abduction bid

Looks like we need to call it a "lucky escape". An aspiring model in Bhopal had to jump out of a moving car in order to get away from an abduction bid orchestrated by none other than the girl's ex-boyfriend.

To add to the woes, there was also an attempted "acid attack" by the jilted lover and a gang of his friends, who, according to the escapee, wanted to extract revenge on her.

Though a police complaint has been lodged and an investigation has begun, the questions we need to ask are really not only about law.

Earlier, if spurned, men would write bad poetry, or mourn over alcohol. Nowadays, it's straightaway abduct and assault; disfigure and debilitate: or teach a violent lesson.

If the caught-on-CCTV videos are anything to go by, violence on a social level, everyday, low key violence is becoming the norm. It's widespread and the sexist violence is one of the most visible, frequently-occurring manifestations of it.

Think about it: can you really exit or enter a relationship because you want to and not because there is someone out there to get you, holding you back at knife-edge or gun-point, forcing you to stay in or stay out of the matters of the heart.

The Bhopal model may have managed to give the assaulters the slip, but what about those who haven't been able to? We have strong laws in place, but where is the deterrence?
