Daily Recco, July 6: Ice Cream Soda for a fanciful summer afternoon

Scoops of ice cream floating in chilled soda. Summer afternoons can't get better than this.

The blazing summer is showing no signs of retreating. It is outside and while you may be on a WFH schedule, there is no way to cool yourself down except perhaps a cold beverage or a delicious scoop of ice cream. What if the two came together? Double treat, you say?

Today we share the recipe for ice cream soda with you. The hot (or should we say the cold) favourite has been a global hit, but the discovery of ice cream soda, albeit innovative, is innocuous enough. It dates way back to 1874 in Philadelphia.

Robert Green's innocuous innovation has become a legendary summer drink globally.

Robert McCay Green, operator of a soda fountain at the Franklin Institute's semi-centennial celebration wanted to create something to attract customers away from another larger, fancier soda fountain down the street. So what did he do? He created a combination of vanilla ice cream and soda water and offered it with a choice of 16 different flavoured syrups! While the competitors soon began aping the new sensation, the Green went on to be considered the originator of ice cream soda. So proud was he of his innovation that in his Will he instructed that “Originator of the Ice Cream Soda” be engraved on his tombstone!

With no further ado, let us recreate Green’s super simple magic.

What you’ll need:

Three-fourths cup of chocolate syrup

One cup of milk

Four cups of chilled carbonated water

Eight scoops of chocolate ice cream

Whipped cream for garnishing (optional)

Four tall glasses (about 450 ml size) to serve

How to:

Place three tablespoons of chocolate syrup in each of the four glasses.

Add a quarter cup of milk and one cup of carbonated water to each. Stir until it is foamy.

Now add two scoops of ice cream to each glass.

Top it up with whipped cream if you are in the mood for something fanciful.

Serve immediately.

Note: You can substitute the ice cream, syrup and soda with any flavour you like.
