857 pornographic websites have been banned in India, post a Supreme Court observation over the failure of the government in blocking child pornography. The order, reportedly, was issued under the provisions of the Information Technology Act and the article 19(2) of the constitution, which empowers the government to impose restrictions in the name of decency and morality. Section 79(3)(B) of the IT act on the other hand, requires all stakeholders to takedown or block access to content when demanded by the government. In addition section 69(A) of the IT act also allows the government to block websites. Only recently, the Supreme Court had upheld the act as constitutional, while the Section 66(A) was struck down. "We have written to the ISPs (internet service providers) to restrict free and open access to 857 websites. This direction is based on the observations made by the honourable Supreme Court on 10 July and using section 79 (3b) of the IT Act read with Article 19 (2) of the Indian constitution," said telecom ministry spokesperson NN Kaul to HuffPost India.
