The biggest movie of the year, Kabali, made it to the big screen amidst maddening expectations.
Holidays were declared, silver coins with Rajini's face distributed, cars with Kabali posters sold and what have you. It's Kabali Day for all and sundry.

The film about the life of a gangster, Kabali, and his long-standing fueds in Malaysia. It stars Radhika Apte as Kabali's wife, Dhansikha as his daughter and Malaysian actor Winston Chow as his arch nemesis.
Rajinikanth's latest touches subjects like caste, redemption, et al - themes left unexplored in quintessential Rajini films. Kabali is Rajinikanth's Don Corleone moment (including getting up after being shot five times) and the movie makes no qualms about it.
His last two films, Kochadaiiyaan and Lingaa struggled too with their Rajini'ness and lacked the distinct intensity you expect from a general Thalaivar film.
In terms of box-office performance too, both movies struggled as distributors claimed they had lost Rs 33 crore on Lingaa, which forced Rajinikanth and producer Rockline Venkatesh to partially compensate them with Rs 10 crore.
Yet, Rajini fans lined up across the world today morning to watch Thalaivar in Kabali, a role very different from his past outings, with him playing his age for the first time.
Did the movie live up to its expectations?
We scoured social media to find out:
Apart from a few scenes, the mass moments are clearly missing. Ranjith fails to do justice to the superstar aura of Thalaivaa. #Kabali
