Cellphone binge: Soon, smartphone over-users will end up with more pain

If the millennial slackers irked you, the hyperactive smartphoning generation are a real pain in the neck — albeit to their own necks and arms.

A woman in China recently found she couldn't move her fingers after a week-long "cellphone binge".

According to this report, the incident took place in China's Hunan province. The unnamed woman from the city of Changsha had to rush to hospital before she regained normal movement in her hand. Incessant use of the phone left her fingers stuck in the smartphone-holding position, unable to bend. Doctors at the hospital told her that she was suffering from tenosynovitis caused by repetitive movements.

There are more such situations that smartphone users are going to find themselves in sooner rather than later, especially if you can't resist looking and jabbing at your phone every two seconds.

Accidents

If you don't die of walking into a lampost, or tripping over your own feet while looking at a cellphone, karma is soon going to catch up with those who are pretty smug about smartphoning while driving.

Anxiety

While you don't realise how much you irritate others around you when you are glued to your device, you also don't realise you have already ceased to exist for them. They are done feeling unimportant and unwanted in your smart-verse. Instead, it's you who should be more concerned — and ultimately end up with anxiety and loneliness.

Yes, incessant smartphone communication can make us feel more isolated. While you spend hours looking at that screen, expecting updates from your friends, a full hour without any notification can lead to anxiety. The experts say so too. “There’s the terrible feeling that the person is ignoring you,” says Dr Richard Graham, a psychologist specialising in technology addiction at Nightingale Hospital, London.

Depression

If anxiety is here, can depression be far behind? Smartphones are believed to have increased depression in users, thanks to the non-stop flow of cyber bullying, access to pornography and a whole range of deep dark places.

Sleep

More than 80 per cent of smartphone users check their phone within one hour of waking or going to sleep. More than 60 per cent of 18- to 29-year-old users take their phones to bed. We don't need to tell you the dangers of this since numerous studies have highlighted the fact that even two hours of exposure to brightly lit screens can lead to sleeping troubles.

F**ked-up relationships

Well, you would know when that happens. We won't say anything.

More than 80 per cent of smartphone users check their devices while talking to friends and family.

For all ya men

According to some studies, cell phone radiation may decrease sperm count, sperm motility and viability.
