Vaccination may save us from Long Covid. Here’s what the study revealed

A recent study has revealed that vaccination against Covid-19 can reduce your chances of long Covid, a condition which may affect the patient weeks and months after the infection.

India has logged 6,396 fresh Covid cases in the last 24 hours. As the Omicron graph has significantly dropped after the peak in January, the country is all set to go back to the pre-covid world. Though many states have already dropped Covid restrictions, a recent IIT study has highlighted concerns over the fourth wave that may spoil your plans.

Well, Covid-19 is not a short-term illness for some. Many Covid patients face complications of the infection even after complete recovery. This condition is known as Long Covid, in which the patient experiences symptoms, weeks and months after the infection.

THE ROLE OF VACCINE

A recent study has explained how vaccination affects the chances of Long Covid. The UK Health Security Agency conducted a review on the effect of vaccination levels on the development of long Covid syndrome.

The data has explained that people who are doubly vaccinated before infection are half as likely to develop Long Covid v/s unvaccinated people or those who have received one single dose.

Dr. Davey Smith, chief of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health at UC San Diego in La Jolla, California told Medical News Today, “This study provides good evidence that having preexisting immunity with vaccination before getting COVID-19 gives some protection from long COVID.

“Even if the COVID-19 vaccines cannot fully protect from infection, at least they strongly protect from bad outcomes like hospitalization and death during the acute infection, and now it seems they also offer some protection from long COVID.”

VACCINATION MAY ALSO HELP FIGHT THE FOURTH WAVE

As per the IIT study, the Omicron sub-variant is more transmissible and may drive the fourth wave in India. The recent IIT study has predicted that the fourth wave may begin around June 22 in India. The study has also focused that the booster dose might affect the severity of the fourth wave in the country.

Long Covid is a severe condition that cannot be ignored. It can also affect heart muscles and other organs of the body, including the brain. Therefore, if you experience symptoms after testing negative, contact your doctor immediately.

So once again, if you are not vaccinated, get your jabs ASAP.
