Daily Recco, January 22: Weekend comedy with Schitt's Creek

For starters, we don’t know how deep the pun in the title of Schitt’s Creek was intended. Roses in Schitt’s Creek. While the makers thought it was funny, the promoters must have had a hard time selling the Canadian sitcom when it was first released, back in 2015. Fast forward to 2021, this title became one of the best jokes of what became a cult classic series that is inarguably one of the best sitcoms of the decade that went by. 

The plot revolves around the Roses — an opulent and conceited family, reeking of wealth, who have to rebuild their lives after being duped by their manager and losing all their money, but for one asset. The asset turns out to be a town they “bought as a joke” for David. The family of four comprises Johnny Rose (played by Eugene Levy) — a video store magnate, his wife Moira Rose (essayed by Catherine O'Hara) — former soap opera actress, and their very adult spoiled children David Rose (Dan Levy) and Alexis Rose (Annie Murphy).

In fact, the sitcom was created by Eugene and Dan Levy, besides playing the lead characters. Dan Levy apparently got the idea for the series when he watched American reality TV and the wealthy families (think Kardashians or their ilk) portrayed in them and wondered how they would react if they lost their money. This fertile imagery, developed with the vision of his father, led to Schitt’s Creek.

Five years since its inception and five seasons later, the series became nothing short of a cult classic when it ended and the sixth - final - season swept all seven major comedy awards at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, creating a record.

This totally binge-watch-worthy series is not your typical rib-splitting laughter riot. Rather, it is filled with some subtle-yet-sharp jabs and well-honed catchphrases that will not leave you in a hurry. Binge watch it on Netflix over the weekend and you can thank us later.
