Uttarakhand is battered by heavy rainfall, which has caused severe flooding in major towns in the state. As of October 20 morning, at least 42 people were reported dead, and many missing. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced financial aid of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed condolence over the loss of lives and informed that rescue operations are in motion to help the afftected.
Modi tweeted, “I am anguished by the loss of lives due to heavy rainfall in parts of Uttarakhand. May the injured recover soon. Rescue operations are underway to help those affected. I pray for everyone's safety and well-being."
The Naini lake has overflown, and the under-construction bridge on the Chalthi river has been washed away. Home Minister Amit Shah will be visiting Uttarakhand today to take stock of the situation.
