Virat Kohli shuts up the great Indian cricket fan trolling Anushka Sharma

Cricket has always been a gentleman's game, no matter how gladiatorial the sport becomes on the pitch. But kudos to Virat Kohli, undoubtedly the greatest batsman playing it at present, for calling it out how Indian cricket fans, mostly men, have turned this passionate sport into an excuse for rabid jingoism and revolting misogyny.

When trolls on Twitter once again targeted Kohli's on-and-off girlfriend and Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma for "breaking up" with the Indian vice-captain, Kohli broke his long overdue silence on the mendacity of it all.

Trolls, in a vicious twist to their taunt, have been thanking Anushka for leaving Virat and thereby helping him exponentially improve his batting performance (supposedly as "evidenced" in India's scintillating victory over Australia in the World T20 Cricket on Sunday evening).

Sample these shining examples of the Great Indian Cricket Fanatic.

Kohli, it seems, couldn't stay mum over the risible display of misogyny as national pastime. His longer outburst on Instagram is a slap on the face of the cowards who call themselves cricket buffs but are neither sporting not gentlemanly by stretch of imagination. Kohli said:

"Shame on those people who have been having a go at anushka for the longest time and connecting every negative thing to her. Shame on those people calling themselves educated. Shame on blaming and making fun of her when she has no control over what i do with my sport. If anything she has only motivated and given me more positivity. This was long time coming. Shame on these people that hide and take a dig. And i dont need any respect for this post. Have some compassion and respect her. Think of how your sister or girlfriend or wife would feel if someone trolled them and very conveniently rubbished them in public. #nocompassion #nocommonsense".
