Cow milk vs camel milk, meat vs veganism: Five food trends that will rule 2019

Costly camel milk might appear in our supermarkets.

Eat one gooseberry (amla) every day.

One apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Have a handful of nuts every day

Eat five servings of fresh vegetables a day.

Seriously?

Do they actually think that we don’t have anything else to do in a day?

But that’s how the food industry has been functioning. One thing in today and tomorrow will be a day for another thing.

Still, here’s a layman’s prediction of the top five food trends that will consistently rule 2019.

1. Eating at home

The food and beverage industry owes a lot of its growth to millennials. Various reports in the past two years have proved how hugely millennials with their habit of eating out 'just for fun' have contributed to the industry.

According to one such report, middle-income urban millennials spend at least Rs 7,914 annually on dining out. This includes purchasing cooked meals from restaurants, caterers and canteens.

But I feel this will change this year — and not only because of all the nutritionists asking us to eat healthy and as there’s no other way to healthy eating other than cooking (or getting food cooked) in our kitchens. This year though, we will finally realise the fortune we are spending on eating out. And we will finally stop ordering in.

Also, many of us individually will fall in the bracket of the ‘economically weak’ section (annual income less than Rs 8 lakh). So, this will be the year of coming back to our kitchens.

No more of ghar ki murgi daal barabar!

2. Vegan eating

The rate at which our animals are being attacked every day, we won’t be able to embrace a vegan lifestyle — the idea being not to harm the animals. But since many influencers will tell us about the pluses of veganism — not eating any animal-based products (no cow milk and milk-based products, no honey), we will try our hand at it.

Vegan Virat Kohli will be our inspiration.

We already saw high-priced gluten-free flour (coconut flour, almond flour) flooding our middle-class supermarkets. I feel 2019 will be ruled by vegetarian meat and vegetarian milk.

We already hear international food giants are gearing up with purple walnut milk.

3. Weird challenges

Short-term weight loss plans will rule, as usual. So people will take up a lot of food challenges: General Motors Diet (You eat one particular food throughout the day), Military Diet, No Sugar Challenge, No Carb Challenge will go on and will probably gather steam. And oh! How can we forget the Keto Challenge (high fat, high protein, no carb diet) — Bollywood will be our constant inspiration.

4. Cow milk/Camel milk

Food dilemmas will remain, in fact, increase, because a number of studies will emerge with contradictory findings. Some will blame cow milk for all your ailments; some will blame the absence of calcium. Meanwhile, costly camel milk might appear in our supermarkets because this is apparently more nutritious than cow milk, at least this year.

5. Green tea

We will believe in the superpowers of green tea — and another hundred varieties will be discovered. Our conviction that a sip of green tea can actually melt our body fat may get strengthened.

And how can I forget the old panacea of all problems: one glass of warm water with lemon and honey on an empty stomach, please.
