Ten things we loved about the Golden Globes

What is not to love about the Golden Globes? Everyone seems to be having a really good time. Everyone is looking their best - well except for Matthew McConaughey, who seemed to have forgotten to shave the forest he had grown on his face. And there are always some great after parties to go to regardless of whether you win or lose.

What's more, unlike our own awards shows, people genuinely seem to turn out to celebrate the movies and television, not themselves. Never mind the bitchiness they displayed in the Sony hack.

So here's why I loved the Golden Globes this year:

#1. The meanest girls in the house, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, got to be really mean. They cracked jokes, looked great in tuxedos and told it like it is, whether it was the questionable quality of The Interview or the rape charges against Bill Cosby. They even got away with laughing at Saint Oprah, or shall we say Saint Winfrey.

The mean girls: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (Right).

#2. Nowhere else would George Clooney be overshadowed by his wife, the loveliest Amal Alamuddin, who unlike her famous husband has a real job saving lives and liberty. A glossy quickly dubbed this phenomenon the trophy husband and I am all for it. Men of a certain age who age as well as Clooney shouldn't be alone.

A match to remember: George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin.

#3. They gave the Best Actor trophy to Michael Keaton. Hollywood loves a comeback story, whether it is Mickey Rourke after The Wrestler or Woody Harrelson after True Detective. With a powerful critique of the narcissim of being an actor, Alejandro Inarritu has given Keaton a whole new career. And reiterated one great truth, no matter how good an actor you are, you will end up one day in a lycra suit wth red shoes. And you should not be ashamed of that. Robert Downey Jr please note.

Micheal Keaton got the Golden Globes Best Actor Motion Picture (Musical/Comedy) for Birdman.

#4. Which other show would recognise the wonderful emotions in Boyhood? We always knew Richard Linklater was a genius, but to actually shoot with actual stars in real time over 12 years? What's more Boyhood allows Patricia Arquette to age on film, change hairstyles and gain weight, like normal women not normally seen in Hollywoodland do. As for Ethan Hawke, welcome back, it's as if you never went away.

All smiles: The cast of Boyhood.

#5. The Globes finally acknowledged that Julianne Moore is the true inheritor of Meryl Streep. The fiery redhead has been turning in remarkable performances in films people have rarely watched, from The End of the Affair to The Kids Are Alright, but this finally seems to be her year, with not just one remarkable performance, as Alice, the linguistics professor who is suffering from Alzheimer's, in Still Alice, but also as the self-obsessed ageing starlet Havana Segrand in David Cronenberg's unsettling Maps to the Stars.

Julianne Moore, the next Meryl Streep?

#6. Everyone loves Englishmen and Englishwomen who put on an American accent. Whether it is Damian Lewis in Homeland or Mathew Rhys in The Americans, it is probably some perverse response from the former colony. That probably explains the success of The Affair and the actress Ruth Wilson (gosh, was that Jane Eyre in that green dress?).

A still from The Affair.

#7. The Golden Globes knows Kevin Spacey aka Frank (or as his icy wife played by Robin Wright likes to call him, Francis) Underwood is a very dangerous man. It's best to give House of Cards' murderous new president of America what he wants or he'll probably push you under a train as he did to poor Kate Mara.

Best Actor TV Series went to Kevin Spacey for House of Cards.

#8. Wes Anderson movies deserved recognition. And the Globes knew it, His gorgeously set up The Grand Budapest Hotel is a film where Anderson is at his best, full of quirky characters, time travelling stories, and Bill Murray in at least a cameo.

Getting his long overdue: Wes Anderson won Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) for The Grand Budapest Hotel.

#9. He may not have won for The Imitation Game but Benedict Cumberbatch is still the best, especially when he photobombs Meryl Streep and Margaret Cho.

Sherlock's revenge.

#10. Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader can be great hosts. Thanks, Tina and Amy, but so long. The former Saturday Night Live stars who worked together in The Skeleton Twins will be next year's perfect hosts. That's called succession planning.

Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig would do a great job at hosting GGA 2016.
