Manohar Parrikar has passed away at the age of 63 after battling cancer for some years. He was Goa's much loved chief minister who served his state over three terms. He was also India's defence minister from 2014-17.
Throughout his career, Mr Parrikar showed a tremendous fighting spirit, taking on the odds with pugnacious fearlessness. He showed this spirit both in numerous political tussles in his home state, where under him, the BJP expanded fulsomely, and as India's defence minister who faced the tough challenges of attacks like Pathankot and Uri, responded to fittingly.
[A day before then Goa CM Manohar Parrikar moved to Delhi to take over as Defence Minister]Me: “How does it feel going from being a big fish in a small pond to being a fish in a big pond?”Parrikar: “I don’t know about pond, but we love fish here in Goa.”RIP, sir. pic.twitter.com/9xqMjqC3ZX— Shiv Aroor (@ShivAroor) March 17, 2019
Another reason Mr Parrikar stood out was his IIT educational background.
At a time when most skilled professionals would not choose the uncertainties and difficulties of politics as a career, Mr Parrikar did exactly that. And shone in his choice, inspiring others to follow.
Known for his modern outlook and his passionate love for his state and country, Mr Parrikar was famed also for his rational views, his ethic of hard work - he served as CM throughout his severe illness - his reputation as an effective and highly professional administrator and his wit and candour.
In an era where these qualities are mostly visible by their absence across the political sphere, Mr Parrikar will be greatly missed.
