Daily Recco, March 5: The dark and funny Flight Attendant

Kaley Cuoco's latest series will make you laugh and bite your nails, in equal measure.

In the last stages of playing Penny in The Big Bang Theory, actress Kaley Cuoco branched out to play other roles and out came, what could be her career-best performance as the protagonist in The Flight Attendant. The show premiered on November 26, 2020, and was already renewed for a second season in December 2020 owing to the immense popularity.

Adapted from Chris Bohjalian’s 2018 eponymous novel, the series, developed by Steve Yockey, revolves around Cassie Bowden (Kaley Cuoco), whose high-paying job as the American flight attendant, allows her to drink, party and bed-hop across the world. While family and friends find her life choices weary, our leading lady is blissfully oblivious to it all until she wakes up hung-over in a hotel in Bangkok, next to the corpse of Alex — the man she was flirting with on her last flight and ends up sleeping with, in Bangkok. His throat is slashed and she doesn’t remember a thing from the night before.

In an unknown land, she is obviously afraid to call the cops. So she proceeds to clean up the crime scene and flies back with the crew to New York City, where she is questioned by the FBI agents about her layover in Bangkok. Who is the killer and how Cassie will turn her life over is a question that the eight episodes unravel.

The supporting cast members lend their weight to the script's frame. From TR Knight (who plays the role of Davey Bowden — Cassie’s brother) who dazzles us with his best performance since Grey's Anatomy to  Michelle Gomez as the amateur-yet-effective sleuth Miranda Croft. The makers keep the scripting tight and the plot is glamorous, funny and gripping in equal measures. The big mystery comes with generous portions of big laughs. As you keep biting your nails in the whodunit plot, the end will come as a smack on the forehead when you realise that the clues have been pointing in that direction all along.
